How to Check PDF Metadata Online
Upload a PDF, then inspect its properties and basic check results. The example below comes from a real three-page contract review.
-
1.Upload your PDF
Choose or drop a PDF of up to 50 MB. The original file is deleted after the check.
-
2.PDFCheck reads the file
It reads document properties, recorded dates, PDF version and creating software, then screens metadata and document-level warning signals.
-
3.Read the report
Review the basic check summary, recorded date timeline and AI-generator indicators. With a free account you can keep reports, make them public by link and export them as PDF.

Understand the file before you use it
Open a PDF's document properties before you share it or rely on the file. Read the author and title fields, recorded dates, creating software, page count and security settings in one report. These details help you choose what to inspect next, while keeping editable metadata separate from proof of authorship.
Inspect PDF metadata- Read the file's background
- Read author fields and creating software alongside the PDF version and page count, so unfamiliar files come with more context.
- Review recorded dates
- Compare creation and modification timestamps and their reliability notes before treating a date as evidence of when work happened.
- Choose the next check
- Review encryption, permissions and generator indicators, then use the relevant specialist check when metadata leaves an important question unanswered.
- Useful for
-
- Reviewing a PDF received from a supplier
- Inspecting document properties before sharing
- Checking metadata dates against your records
How the PDF metadata checker works
The metadata checker reads document properties and XMP metadata, records dates and creating software, and screens document-level warning signals. Results are saved as report data; the original uploaded PDF is not saved by this workflow. These findings help you inspect file properties, rather than establish who wrote the content or reconstruct every edit.
-
Select and screen the file
Choose one PDF. The upload is checked against your plan's size allowance and the PDF safety screening rules before its properties are read.
-
Read available properties
The homepage uses bounded extraction with pdfinfo, a streamed XMP search and a security sample. If information cannot be read, the report may contain only a PDF version and estimated page count.
-
Build the check summary
The report brings together file type, date metadata, creating software, page information and security-marker checks. These findings do not certify authenticity, standards conformance or the absence of malware.
-
Open your report
The report belongs to your browser session or account. A free account is required to make it publicly accessible by link. The report stores extracted data, not a copy of the PDF.
What the report shows Limits and what it does not do
- Document properties
- Available title, author, subject, keywords, PDF version and page count, as recorded in the file.
- Recorded dates
- Creation and modification timestamps, their sources, date-quality notes and the interval between them when both are available.
- Creating software
- Creator and producer fields matched against a PDF software catalog. Generator indicators can come from both AI and ordinary automated workflows.
- Security indicators
- Encryption and permission information, plus JavaScript, OpenAction, embedded-file and Launch markers found in the sampled beginning of the file.
- Basic check summary
- The summary reflects metadata and document-level checks. A passing label does not prove that every page renders correctly or every internal object is valid.
- Optional malware scan
- Eligible paid accounts can request a separate VirusTotal reputation check when the scanning service is available. Scanning quotas apply; no scan guarantees that every threat will be found.
Limits and what it does not do
- Metadata can be edited or removed. Author fields, timestamps and generator names are not proof of identity, authenticity or a complete edit history.
- This is not a PDF/A, PDF/X, PDF/UA or WCAG conformance audit, and it does not establish whether a digital signature is trustworthy.
- Security markers are sampled from the first 2 MB. Markers elsewhere, unreadable metadata and internal rendering problems can be missed.
- The homepage workflow does not produce detailed font or image analysis. Use the dedicated font checker or image extractor for those tasks.
- Single-file daily checks do not require an account. File-size and daily allowances follow your active plan.
Frequently Asked Questions About PDF Metadata
How do I check PDF metadata online?
Choose or drop a PDF in the upload area. The metadata viewer reads available document properties, recorded dates, author fields, page count and creating software, then opens the report. Free daily single-file checks do not require an account.
What is a PDF metadata viewer?
A PDF metadata viewer is a tool that reads and displays hidden information embedded within PDF files. This includes properties like the document title, author name, creation and modification dates, the software used to create the PDF, page count, and security settings. PDFCheck shows these fields for free.
Can I check if a PDF was AI-generated?
PDFCheck can show indicators. It checks PDF metadata for software often used by LLMs and AI systems, including ReportLab, PyPDF, WeasyPrint, pdf-lib, PDFKit, Puppeteer, and Playwright. It shows a risk score and the markers found. These are indicators, not proof that the content was written by AI.
Is the PDF metadata checker free?
Yes, PDFCheck offers free daily checks with no registration required. The checker does not keep the original upload after the request; result metadata and files used by other workflows follow the retention rules in our Privacy Policy. Upgraded plans provide higher limits.
How do I check if a PDF has been edited or modified?
Open the Dates section of the report and compare the recorded creation and modification timestamps. Different dates can suggest a later save, but dates can be changed or removed and do not show what was edited. Treat them as clues, not a complete edit history.
Can I view PDF metadata without installing software?
Use the PDF metadata checker on the website without installing a desktop app. Choose a PDF and wait for its report. Processing time depends on the file and the available service.
What PDF metadata can this tool extract?
The report reads available document title, author, subject, creation and modification dates, creator and producer software, PDF version, page count, encryption and permission settings. It also shows metadata-based AI-generator indicators and basic file checks. Detailed font and image analysis is not part of the homepage upload.
How do I check PDF integrity online?
Upload your PDF to PDFCheck and it runs basic checks automatically. The checks tab shows whether the file type is PDF, whether key metadata is present, how reliable the dates look, and whether risky content such as JavaScript was found. This is not a full structural integrity audit.
What to do next
Choose the next step for your PDF. Each tool starts with a new upload.
View all PDF tools- Batch PDF Checker See file names, page counts, sizes and detected software in one table, making differing properties easier to pick out.
- Metadata Editor Set the title and author shown in document properties so readers can identify the document and its intended attribution.
- Compare PDFs Review highlighted changes in page count, file size, title and author fields, rather than checking each property in separate windows.
